Mach III Clutch, Inc. is a family owned and operated company that began on the basement drawing board of its founder, Raleigh Becknell, in the late 1950's. Then known as Mach III Laboratory, the company specialized in miniature air clutches that were assembled at the kitchen table by Mr. Becknell and his wife, Anne. These small units featured the stationary air housing that was invented and patented by Mr. Becknell in 1962 and has since become an industry standard.

The STATIONARY AIR HOUSING allows the connection of an external airline to a portion of the clutch housing which remains stationary as the internal drive hub (carrier) rotates with the shaft. The sleeve (pilot) is engaged when air pressure is applied to the clutch. This design permits mid-shaft mounting of the clutch without rifle drilling of the shaft or the use of shaft seals and allows for a variety of new design possibilities.

With design flexibility as a cornerstone, Mach III has grown through the development of pioneering designs. To date, the company's files contain thousands of standard and custom product designs used by hundreds of OEM, distributor and end user customers. Areas of specialization include combination clutch-brakes, accumulating conveyor clutches and slip clutches and brakes for unwind, rewind and other tension control applications.
